Passion: (noun) a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something.
Discovering your passion through the entertainment industry might sound a little extreme but for me, it happened. Since I was a child, I was in love with movies, television shows, and music. Unlike other children, one of my favorite things to do was spot brands in these sources. Every Friday night I was at Blockbuster picking the movie I wanted to see just to become in love with brands I one day hope to represent. If you asked me 15 years ago what I wanted to do in life, it would probably be along the lines of Hollywood.
Do you remember the first movie that you fell in love with? For me, it was Legally Blonde. It was a movie centered around my favorite color, pink and featured a strong female role. I did not realize it then, I was only five years old, but Legally Blonde inspired me to go into marketing. Not only did Elle Woods inspire me to be a strong, independent woman but she also introduced me to product placement. The very first scene of Legally Blonde is filled with product placement.
Items like Herbal Essence, Prada, Clinique, Cosmopolitan (AKA the Bible) were just one of the few products featured within the first three minutes. 15 years later, I still watch this movie religiously. Each time I watch it I recognize more and more brands that are purposely hidden within the movie.
One of my favorite product placements in this movie is Apple. Elle realizes she no longer is in Harvard Law School just to get Warner but to really prove to everyone that she knows her worth and can get her law degree.
In this scene, all you see in the background is Apple computers. It is fitting since the movie is based in college and the demographic the movie was targeted to were students.
If wasn’t for this movie, I would have never loved branding as much as I do today. It helped me fall in love with how brands market themselves. I started looking at movies not just for entertainment but to learn more about brands. Branding is my passion. In my blogs, I will be discussing certain movies that influenced my career path, brands I will love to work for and product placement.
